Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. has reached out to New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection with a request for a public briefing on the state’s forest fire preparedness. The senator sent a letter to Commissioner Shawn LaTourette emphasizing the need for local and state officials to be informed about current readiness measures.
The letter highlighted concerns stemming from recent wildfires in California. “Like many of my constituents, I am deeply concerned about the wildfires raging in California, especially with respect to the loss of life, destruction of property, and the safety of first responders,” Amato stated. He also pointed out New Jersey’s past experiences with significant forest fires, saying, “I also remain greatly concerned that in relatively recent years, New Jersey lost record acreage due to forest fires.”
Amato underscored the importance of ensuring that elected officials are proactive in addressing these concerns. “In view of this ongoing national tragedy and our relatively recent record acreage losses, I strongly believe that elected officials have an obligation to assure New Jersey residents that the state is prepared to fight a major wildfire event.”
