The Senate Education Committee has unanimously advanced a bipartisan resolution led by Senator Jon Bramnick (R-21) that aims to foster civility among students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The initiative would create the Joint Statesmanship Task Force, which will visit schools to discuss the importance of civil behavior and share personal examples of resolving disagreements respectfully.
Senator Bramnick explained his motivation for sponsoring the resolution: “The rise of political violence and inflammatory rhetoric has a real impact on our kids,” said Sen. Bramnick. “Today’s youth face a constant barrage of disturbing images and derogatory comments online that deepens divides and damages public discourse. We need to teach students that disagreement and debate are normal and strengthens society but must be grounded in civility and respect.”
The resolution, identified as SCR-116, outlines responsibilities for the task force, including school visits focused on teaching core values of civility in daily life. The task force members are expected to demonstrate practical ways they have managed conflicts with peers using respectful dialogue.
Senator Bramnick has been active in promoting civil discourse within educational settings, having participated in public debates with Senator Joe Cryan (D-20) intended to model constructive political discussion.
