The New Jersey Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee advanced legislation on June 1 sponsored by Senator Doug Steinhardt and Senator Parker Space to strengthen public participation requirements at local government meetings across the state.

“Government works best when the public has a voice in the decisions being made,” said Senator Doug Steinhardt. “If elected officials are making decisions that affect local communities, residents deserve the opportunity to provide input before those decisions are made. This bill reinforces transparency and accountability at every level of local government.”

The proposed bill, S-4116, would require county commissioners to provide time for public comment at their meetings, aligning their procedures with those already in place for municipal governments and school boards. The legislation is intended to ensure residents have an opportunity to speak before decisions are made on issues impacting their communities.

“Residents should not feel shut out of the process when important decisions are being made,” said Senator Parker Space. “This legislation helps ensure the public has a voice before votes are taken on issues that directly impact their communities.”

According to the official website, Bucco serves as Senate Republican Leader, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, serves on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, represents New Jersey’s 25th Legislative District, provides constituent services through his district office and email for legislative inquiries, and engages in sponsoring bills and committee discussions on key state issues.
