The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee passed a bill sponsored by Senator Joe Pennacchio on Mar. 16 to designate October as Eczema Awareness Month in an effort to reduce the stigma associated with the skin condition.
Eczema affects more than 32 million people across the United States. The bill aims to increase public understanding of eczema and support those living with it by encouraging compassion and awareness. “Eczema affects tens of millions of Americans and by recognizing October as Eczema Awareness Month, we can help bring a greater understanding to a condition that many people quietly struggle with every day. Raising awareness encourages compassion, supports those living with eczema, and helps ensure they know they are not alone,” Pennacchio said.
The legislation calls for the Governor to issue an annual proclamation recognizing Eczema Awareness Month each October. It also encourages public officials and citizens throughout the state to observe the month through appropriate activities and programs.
Senator Anthony M. Bucco is among the legislators involved in committee work related to health issues. According to the official website, Bucco provides constituent services through his district office and email for legislative inquiries, serves as a member of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, engages in sponsoring bills, co-sponsoring legislation, and contributing to committee discussions on key state issues, holds the position of Senate Republican Leader while chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, has led as Senate Republican Leader previously while chairing Judiciary, and represents New Jersey’s 25th Legislative District as senator (according to the official website).
Supporters say that raising awareness about eczema could help reduce misconceptions about the condition while offering encouragement for those affected. The full text of Bill SJR-30 is available online.
