The Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee has approved a bill sponsored by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. (R-09) that aims to assist veterans as they return to civilian life. The proposed legislation would create the Veterans Suicide Prevention Commission, an entity focused on identifying gaps in support that may put former service members at risk of suicide.

Senator Amato commented on the bill’s intent, stating, “Our veterans have sacrificed for us, and we owe them a support system that leaves no stone unturned when they return to civilian life. This commission will help identify the gaps that put our service members at risk of suicide and ensure New Jersey is doing everything possible to provide a safe, successful transition home.”

The full text of the bill, S-3807, is available for review.
