The New Jersey Senate approved on Mar. 23 legislation sponsored by Senator Owen Henry that would designate a portion of State Highway Route 35 in Laurence Harbor as the “James Franscisco and Walter Schmidt Memorial Roadway.” The bill, S-497, seeks to honor two U.S. Army soldiers from Laurence Harbor who died during the Vietnam War.
This legislative move aims to recognize the sacrifices made by Private First-Class James Leonard Francisco and Specialist 4 Walter James Schmidt, both of whom served with distinction before being killed in action. The designation is intended to ensure their legacy remains visible within their home community.
“James Francisco and Walter Schmidt answered the call of duty with courage and selflessness, serving their country with honor,” said Senator Henry. “Their bravery and sacrifice deserve to be remembered by future generations, and this designation ensures their legacy will live on in the community they proudly called home.”
Francisco was born in 1948, joined the U.S. Army in 1968 as a light weapons infantryman with the 9th Infantry Division, and was killed in South Vietnam on February 5, 1969. He received a posthumous Purple Heart. Schmidt was born in 1944 and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry; he died on November 8, 1966 during Operation Attleboro and was posthumously awarded both the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his heroism.
