Two southbound lanes on Route 9 in Perth Amboy will be closed on Friday and Saturday nights as part of the ongoing Garden State Parkway bridge project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). The closures are necessary for the installation of girders on the bridge.

The scheduled closures will begin at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 6, and last until 6 a.m. Saturday, March 7. The same schedule will apply for Saturday night into Sunday morning. During these times, only the left lane on Route 9 southbound will remain open just past the exit to Route 440 southbound/I-287/Raritan Center. Temporary traffic stoppages lasting about 15 minutes may occur after midnight to allow for beam installation. Additionally, the Route 9 southbound exit to Smith Street is expected to close temporarily several times overnight for approximately 15 minutes each time.

The ramp from Route 440 southbound and Riverside Drive to Route 9 southbound will also be closed and detoured during these hours. The Garden State Parkway Exit 127 ramp to Route 440 southbound/I-287 northbound is scheduled for closure as well; however, the Exit 127 ramp to Route 9 northbound will remain open.

Motorists traveling from Staten Island on Route 440 southbound who wish to access Route 9 southbound should follow posted detours that redirect them through local roads including CR 624, Fayette Street, and Route 35 before returning to Route 9. Those coming from Riverside Drive seeking access to Route 9 southbound are advised to use Smith Street and then proceed via Route 35.

Drivers using the Garden State Parkway intending to reach either direction of Route 440 from Exit 127 should follow designated detour routes involving New Brunswick Avenue and Florida Grove Road.

NJDOT encourages motorists to consult its official traffic information website at www.511nj.org for updates regarding construction schedules and real-time travel conditions. Updates are also available through NJDOT’s social media channels on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.
