Route 77 northbound in Bridgeton, Cumberland County will be closed and detoured during the day starting Tuesday, as the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) begins work to replace a damaged stormwater pipe. The closure will occur from Penn Street to Madison Street, Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is expected to last several weeks.

A long-term shoulder closure on Route 77 northbound will also begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, and continue until 10 a.m. Monday, January 19. During this period, parking on the right shoulder between Penn Street/CR 665 and Madison Street will be prohibited due to construction activities.

The official detour for motorists traveling northbound on Route 77 directs drivers to turn left onto Penn Street, then right onto North Laurel Street, followed by another right onto Bridgeton Avenue before rejoining Route 77.

This project is part of a $7.1 million state-funded maintenance effort aimed at restoring stormwater infrastructure across multiple counties including Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem.

Motorists are advised that work schedules may change depending on weather or other unforeseen factors. Drivers are encouraged to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for updates on construction and real-time travel conditions.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Watch NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor’s message about making roadway safety a way of life,” according to the NJDOT statement.
