The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on June 3 that Route 7 will experience temporary traffic stoppages for testing of the Belleville Bridge over the Passaic River. The bridge connects Belleville in Essex County with Kearny in Hudson County and North Arlington in Bergen County.

From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Route 7 is scheduled to have temporary 15-minute traffic stoppages in both directions before the Belleville Bridge. The department said these stoppages are necessary to allow for testing of the lift bridge, advising motorists to use caution, slow down, and expect delays.

The work is part of the National Bridge Inspection Standards bi-annual inspection, which is federally funded for all bridges in New Jersey. As part of this inspection, every movable bridge undergoes Interlock Safety Testing to ensure safe operation for both roadway and marine traffic.

Attenuator trucks will be used to block the roadway at intervals while testing takes place. The timing of the work may change due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are encouraged by officials to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time travel updates and follow NJDOT on social media platforms including X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.
