The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 14 that Route 54 will be closed in both directions during the day next week in Hammonton, Atlantic County, as part of a pavement resurfacing and rehabilitation project.
The closure is expected to affect drivers from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The affected section runs from Liberty Street to Valley Avenue. Local access for residents will be maintained throughout the project. The department said the full road closure is necessary to remove trees along the route.
Detours will be set up for both northbound and southbound traffic. Northbound motorists will be directed onto North Chew Road, then Fairview Avenue via 13th Street, and back onto Route 54 via Route 30/White Horse Pike eastbound. Southbound drivers coming from Route 206/Bellevue Avenue will take Route 30/White Horse Pike westbound, then Fairview Avenue via 13th Street, and return to Route 54 via North Chew Road.
This work is part of an $8.7 million federally funded project covering approximately three miles of Route 54 between the Atlantic City Expressway and Route 30/White Horse Pike. Planned improvements include milling and paving, drainage system upgrades, utility relocation, new sidewalks with ADA-compliant curb ramps, and intersection enhancements such as traffic signal upgrades. The project is scheduled for completion in spring of 2027.
Variable messaging signs are being used to notify drivers about changes in traffic patterns related to this work. The department advised that schedules may change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for updates.
