Route 54 in Hammonton, Atlantic County, will be closed in both directions for daytime hours next week as part of a pavement resurfacing and rehabilitation project. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that the closures will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, January 19 through Friday, January 23. The affected area stretches from Liberty Street to Valley Avenue. Local residents will still have access during this period.
The full closure is necessary to allow for tree removal as part of the initial phase of the project. If work is finished ahead of schedule, the roadway will reopen sooner than planned.
Detours have been established for both northbound and southbound traffic on Route 54. Northbound motorists will be directed onto North Chew Road, then to 13th Street (which becomes Fairview Avenue), and back onto Route 30/White Horse Pike eastbound before returning to Route 54. Southbound drivers on Route 206/Bellevue Avenue heading toward Route 54 southbound should turn right onto Route 30/White Horse Pike westbound, left onto Fairview Avenue (which becomes 13th Street), then left onto North Chew Road to rejoin Route 54.
This work is part of an $8.7 million federally funded project aimed at resurfacing and rehabilitating approximately three miles of Route 54 between the Atlantic City Expressway and Route 30/White Horse Pike in Hammonton. The improvements include milling and paving, drainage system upgrades, utility relocation, new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, intersection enhancements such as traffic signal upgrades, and other related repairs. The entire project is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
To keep drivers informed about changes in traffic patterns during construction, variable messaging signs are being used throughout the area. NJDOT advises motorists that schedules may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Drivers are encouraged to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time updates on construction activities and travel conditions.
“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Watch NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor’s message about making roadway safety a way of life,” said NJDOT officials.
