The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has postponed the planned daytime closures of Route 54 in both directions that were set for next week in Hammonton, Atlantic County. The closures, which would have affected the stretch between Liberty Street and Valley Avenue, are part of a larger pavement resurfacing and rehabilitation project. NJDOT stated that advance notice will be provided once the work is rescheduled.
The project is funded with $8.7 million in federal funds and covers about three miles of Route 54 from the Atlantic City Expressway to Route 30/White Horse Pike. Planned improvements include milling and paving, drainage system upgrades, utility relocation, new sidewalks, and installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps. Upgrades to traffic signals at various intersections within the project area are also included. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Variable messaging signs are being used to alert drivers about changes in traffic patterns related to the construction. The timing of the work may change depending on weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Drivers are advised to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for updates on construction and real-time travel information. Updates can also be found on NJDOT’s social media platforms including X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.
