The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced that the Route 31 southbound ramps to and from Center Street in Clinton, Hunterdon County will be closed starting Friday afternoon through Monday morning. The closures are necessary for watermain installation as part of an ongoing pavement reconstruction project.
According to NJDOT, the affected ramps will close at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 16 and are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, January 19. Access to businesses on Center Street will remain available during this period.
Detours will be in place for motorists. Those traveling southbound on Route 31 who wish to access Center Street will be directed to turn right onto Grayrock Road before reaching Center Street, then turn left onto Center Street. Motorists on Center Street looking to enter Route 31 southbound should take Grayrock Road and then turn right onto Route 31 southbound.
The closure is part of a $24.8 million federally funded project that involves reconstructing the pavement between I-78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road in Clinton. The work includes replacing deteriorated concrete with full-depth asphalt, realigning intersections to improve sight distance, extending acceleration lanes for safer merging, upgrading drainage systems, replacing guiderails, improving lighting and signage, and repairing bridge decks. The entire project is expected to conclude by fall 2026.
Work schedules may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. NJDOT advises motorists to check their traffic information website at www.511nj.org for updates and real-time travel information.
