The left lane on Route 31 southbound in Clinton, Hunterdon County, will be closed starting Friday afternoon. Traffic will be redirected to the newly completed right lane as part of the ongoing pavement reconstruction project from I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road.
The closure will begin at 1 p.m. on June 27 and affect the section between Grayrock Road and Country Club Drive/Walnut Pond Road. The Route 31 southbound ramp to I-78 eastbound will remain open during this phase of construction. This traffic pattern is expected to last until early fall.
This $24.8 million federally funded project aims to replace deteriorated concrete with full-depth asphalt reconstruction. Additional improvements include realigning the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound for better sight distance, extending the acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, and enhancing drainage, guiderails, lighting, and signage. Concrete deck repairs on bridges are also part of the plan.
Completion is anticipated by fall 2026, but schedules may change due to weather or other factors. Motorists can visit NJDOT’s website at www.511nj.org for updates and travel information.
