The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 26 that Route 30 will have lane closures in both directions on Thursday night as part of an ongoing resurfacing project in Camden County. The work will also require the closure and detour of the Route 30 eastbound exit ramp to Memorial Avenue, with all changes set to begin tomorrow evening.
The lane closures are part of a $49.6 million resurfacing project intended to extend the useful life of approximately six miles of Route 30 between Cooper Street and Grove Street. The affected areas include Camden, Pennsauken, Collingswood, Oaklyn, Haddon Township, Audubon, and Haddon Heights.
According to the announcement, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday morning, two lanes on Route 30 eastbound will be closed from just after the Tenth Street overpass to near Bank Street in Camden. At least one lane will remain open overnight while crews restripe the roadway and install concrete construction barriers. By Friday morning at 6 a.m., all three lanes are expected to reopen but shifted toward the center median so that guiderail replacement and curb work can take place along the right side.
Additionally, starting at 7 p.m., the Route 30 eastbound exit ramp to Memorial Avenue before Federal Street overpass is scheduled for closure and detour lasting several months due to road and bridge work. Drivers wishing to access Memorial Avenue will be directed further down Route 30 before turning right onto Memorial Avenue after passing Federal Street overpass.
On westbound Route 30, lane closures are planned from Seventeenth Street to Linden Street during overnight hours for restriping purposes; by Friday morning one right lane between those points will remain closed for several months while three lanes stay open for traffic flow improvements such as guiderail replacement and drainage upgrades. Additional westbound restrictions from Haddon Avenue across North Park Avenue bridge aim to facilitate barrier installation along curbs.
The larger project includes upgrading fourteen traffic signals with new pedestrian push buttons and signal heads; installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps; repairing sidewalks; improving guiderails; adding underground conduit for Intelligent Transportation System wiring; making necessary bridge repairs including deck joint repairs; installing pedestrian separation barriers on bridges over Cooper River at mileposts 1.79 and 3.61; as well as enhancing connectivity with multi-use bike paths crossing North Park Drive.
Motorists are advised by officials to use caution in work zones throughout this period of construction activity and check www.511nj.org or NJDOT social media channels for updates.
