The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 14 that the right lane of Route 3 eastbound and ramps to and from Passaic Avenue in Clifton, Passaic County, are closed following a tractor trailer crash. The closures are expected to remain in place through the night as crews work to safely remove the vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday, April 13, when a tractor trailer traveling on Route 3 eastbound crashed at the Passaic Avenue ramp and damaged a building. Two lanes on Route 3 eastbound remain open while emergency crews handle removal operations.

Motorists traveling in the area are advised to use caution, slow down, and move over if possible. Detours have been established for affected drivers. Eastbound motorists seeking access to Passaic Avenue will be directed to continue on Route 3 eastbound, take the exit for Main Avenue, turn right onto Main Avenue under Route 3, then take another right onto Route 3 westbound before exiting again at Passaic Avenue.

For those attempting to access Route 3 eastbound from Passaic Avenue or nearby streets such as Ward Avenue or Kensington Avenue, drivers will be rerouted onto Route 3 westbound first. From there they should take the Bloomfield Avenue/CR622 exit ramp, turn left onto Bloomfield Avenue/CR622, then left again for access back onto Route 3 eastbound.

Officials said that timing of detour changes may depend on weather or other factors. Motorists can check real-time travel information by visiting NJDOT’s traffic website at www.511nj.org or follow updates via NJDOT’s social media channels.
