Route 29 in Trenton, Mercer County will be closed overnight this week for an electrical inspection of the Route 29 Tunnel, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). The closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, until 5 a.m. Wednesday, January 14. The same closure times will apply on Wednesday night into Thursday and Thursday night into Friday.

During these periods, both northbound and southbound lanes through the tunnel will be affected. Northbound Route 29 will be closed between Route 129 and the Lalor Street/CR 650 ramp onto Route 29. Southbound Route 29 will be closed between Cass Street and the Lamberton Road ramp onto Route 29. The closure is necessary to conduct an electrical inspection inside the tunnel.

The ramp from Route 29 northbound to South Lamberton Road/Duck Island will remain open during the overnight hours.

For drivers heading northbound on Route 29, detours will direct them to use the ramp to Route 129/Trenton, turn left onto Cass Street, stay right for Trenton Mercer Airport/Downtown Trenton/Capital Complex, then merge back onto Route 29 northbound.

Southbound motorists will need to stay left for ramps leading toward several destinations including Route 33, NJ Transit/AMTRAK stations, Market Street and Arena locations. They should then turn left onto South Stockton Street and take a series of ramps that return them eventually to I-295/I-195 or back to southbound Route 29.

“The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors,” according to NJDOT.

Motorists are advised to check real-time travel updates at www.511nj.org for current information about road conditions and closures.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Watch NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor’s message about making roadway safety a way of life.”
