The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 14 that Route 27, also known as Frelinghuysen Avenue, will be closed in both directions between Concord Street and Route 22 in Newark starting Monday for railroad crossing repairs. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on March 16 and continue until 7 p.m. on March 19.
The closure is necessary to replace the railroad crossing and approaches at the Peddie Street intersection. Access for local traffic and businesses will be maintained during the construction period, but detours will be in place for through traffic.
Northbound motorists will be directed to turn left onto Meeker Avenue, right onto Elizabeth Avenue, then right onto Concord Street before returning to Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue. Southbound drivers will be directed to turn right onto Concord Street, left onto Elizabeth Avenue, then left onto Meeker Avenue before rejoining Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue.
According to the department, the project aims to provide a safer and smoother railroad crossing by installing new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches. This work is part of a federally funded program that repairs or upgrades about 50 railroad crossings each year across New Jersey.
The timing of the work may change depending on weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time updates.
