The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 12 that the Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/County Road 694 in West Milford, Morris County, will be closed and detoured during the day on Thursday, March 12. The closure is scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and is necessary for the demolition of a bridge pier from the old Route 23 Bridge over Pequannock River/Hamburg Turnpike.

This closure is part of the ongoing $78.2 million federally funded project to replace the Route 23 Bridge over Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike, and railroad tracks. The project also includes drainage and utility improvements and spans between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County. Completion is expected in fall 2028.

During the closure, motorists traveling southbound on Route 23 who wish to access Hamburg Turnpike or High Crest Road/Bloomingdale will be directed to continue on Route 23 southbound, take the ramp to Kinnelon/Butler, turn left onto Kinnelon Road/County Road 618 (which becomes Kiel Avenue), turn left onto Park Place, then right onto Main Street (which becomes Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694). Traffic on Route 23 itself will not be affected by this ramp closure.

Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect minor delays when traveling through the work zone. The timing of construction activities may change due to weather or other factors.

For updates about construction schedules and real-time travel information, drivers are encouraged to visit NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org or follow NJDOT’s social media accounts.
