The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 15 that daytime lane closures will take place this week on Route 23 northbound in West Milford, Passaic County, as the Bridge over the Pequannock River project reaches its final stages.
The lane closures are necessary to complete final paving work. One lane on Route 23 northbound will be closed between the traffic signal at Reservoir Road and Canistear Road from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, and again during those hours on Thursday, April 16. At least one lane will remain open for traffic during these times. If work finishes early each day, the closed lane will reopen sooner; if paving is not completed by Thursday, the closure may continue into Friday.
In addition to this week’s work, shoulder closures are expected over the next few weeks for rumble strip installation. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution in the area, and expect delays due to these activities.
The $7.3 million project covers mileposts 25.13 to 25.70 along Route 23 at the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Jefferson in Morris County. The bridge deck and substructure were replaced due to poor condition; other improvements include better sight distances for drivers, updated guiderails meeting current standards, and new wildlife passages beneath the bridge.
Variable Message Signs have been placed along Route 23 to alert motorists about changes in traffic patterns associated with construction work. The department notes that scheduling may change based on weather or other factors.
