Lane closures are scheduled for Route 23 this weekend to facilitate the shift of southbound traffic onto a temporary bridge. This development is part of the ongoing Route 23 Bridge replacement project over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike, affecting areas in West Milford, Passaic County, and Kinnelon, Morris County.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, until noon on Sunday, October 26, a single lane in both directions will be closed. The closure aims to restripe the roadway and reposition construction barriers to redirect southbound traffic onto a temporary bridge. The exit ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694 will remain accessible during this period.
By noon on Sunday, both lanes of Route 23 southbound will be shifted onto the temporary bridge over the ramp to Hamburg Turnpike, railroad tracks, and the Pequannock River. All northbound lanes will reopen by this time as well. If work concludes ahead of schedule, lanes may reopen sooner. This traffic pattern is expected to remain until fall 2028.
In November, NJDOT plans to shift Route 23 northbound lanes onto another temporary bridge. Advance notice will be provided before this change occurs. These shifts are necessary for demolishing and reconstructing the existing bridge.
The $78.2 million federally funded project includes replacing the bridge over Pequannock River and making drainage and utility improvements between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford and Butler in Morris County. Completion is anticipated by fall 2028.
Motorists should exercise caution and anticipate delays when navigating through these work zones. Updates on construction can be found at NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org. For further updates from NJDOT, follow them on X (Twitter) @NewJerseyDOT or Instagram @NewJersey.DOT.
