The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 10 that Route 206 northbound in Hillsborough, Somerset County, will experience temporary traffic stoppages overnight as part of ongoing construction work. The stoppages are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, and continue until 6 a.m. Saturday, April 11.
The temporary halts will occur between Doctor’s Way and Valley Road to allow workers to reposition construction drums and expand the work zone for the new northbound lane. According to the department, these changes are necessary as part of the broader Route 206 project from Doctors Way to Valley Road.
Recent progress on the project includes completion of wire transfers by PSE&G, repaving ramps, installing guiderails, and finishing most curb work. Installation of reinforced concrete pipes and drainage basins has also been completed. Construction continues on both the new northbound lane and the Valley Road Bridge, along with sidewalk installation.
This federally funded project aims to create two travel lanes in each direction along this stretch of Route 206. Additional improvements include building a new median barrier designed to eliminate left turns into or out of properties directly onto Route 206. Instead, drivers will use newly signalized intersections and jughandles for turning movements—measures intended to reduce turn-related crashes and improve overall traffic flow.
Portable variable message signs are being used in advance of pattern changes associated with this phase of construction. The timing may change depending on weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged by officials to check real-time travel information at www.511nj.org or follow NJDOT updates through social media channels.
