Route 18 southbound in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, will be closed overnight next week as part of ongoing drainage and pavement rehabilitation work. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that the closure will occur between Tices Lane and Milltown Road.

The closure is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. on Monday, January 12, and last until 5 a.m. Tuesday, January 13. This schedule will continue each night through Friday, January 16. NJDOT stated that if there is inclement weather, the work will take place the following night instead.

According to NJDOT, “the full road closure is necessary to reconstruct the right lane on Route 18 southbound.” During this period, motorists traveling southbound on Route 18 will be directed to turn right onto Tices Lane, then left onto Harts Lane, followed by another left onto Milltown Road to return to Route 18 southbound. Alternatively, drivers can take the ramp toward South River/New Brunswick and return via Route 18 northbound.

This work is part of an $86.1 million federally funded project aimed at rehabilitating about four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick. The project includes milling and paving, upgrades to drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, new sidewalks with ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail improvements, and intersection enhancements. Completion is expected in late 2027.

Electronic signs are being used to notify drivers about changes in traffic patterns related to this construction. NJDOT advised that “the precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.”

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for updates on construction activities and real-time travel conditions.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Watch NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor’s message about making roadway safety a way of life,” said NJDOT.
