Route 18 southbound in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, will be closed tonight as part of ongoing drainage and pavement rehabilitation work. The closure will take place from Edgeboro Road to West Ferris Street beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and is expected to last until 5 a.m. on Saturday, February 7.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) stated that the full road closure is necessary for the installation of a gas main. During this period, motorists traveling southbound on Route 18 will be directed to use a detour route: they will take the ramp to Edgeboro Road/Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527 South/U and Left Turns, cross over Route 18, turn right onto Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527 southbound, then turn right onto West Ferris Street to return to Route 18.
According to NJDOT, “This work is part of the $86.1 million federally funded Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project that will make repairs on approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. Work includes milling and paving, improvements to the drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps and upgrading guiderail. Improvements will also be made to various intersections throughout the project limits. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.”
To keep drivers informed about traffic pattern changes related to this construction activity, variable messaging signs are being used along the route. NJDOT notes that scheduling may change depending on weather or other factors.
Drivers are encouraged by NJDOT officials to consult the department’s traffic information website for real-time updates about construction progress at www.511nj.org.
