The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 28 that Route 18 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, will have overnight lane closures in both directions next week as part of ongoing drainage and pavement rehabilitation work.
The planned closures are expected to affect traffic and may cause delays for motorists traveling through the area. The project aims to improve safety and infrastructure along approximately four and a half miles of Route 18.
According to the announcement, southbound lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. Monday, March 30 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, continuing each night through Friday, April 3 during the same hours. The right lane on Route 18 southbound will be closed from Edgeboro Road to Icker Avenue for gas main work. Northbound lanes will be affected beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, March 30 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 31 with right and center lanes closed from Rues Lane to Racetrack Road for drainage work.
Additional southbound closures are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday nights between Edgeboro Road and Cranbury Road for drainage work. Northbound right and center lanes will also be closed Thursday night into Saturday morning between Arthur Street and Hope Street for similar improvements.
This $86.1 million federally funded project includes milling and paving, upgrades to drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks with ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail upgrades, as well as intersection improvements throughout the project limits. Completion is anticipated by late 2027.
Motorists are advised to slow down in the work zone and expect possible detours if ramps are closed during construction periods. Variable messaging signs are being used to notify drivers about upcoming changes in traffic patterns; however, all dates remain subject to change due to weather or other factors.
