The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 23 that Route 18 northbound will be closed and detoured overnight Monday and Tuesday between Arthur Street and Milltown Road in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. The closure is part of ongoing drainage and pavement rehabilitation work.
The project aims to reconstruct the right and center lanes under the Milltown Road Bridge over Route 18. Closures are scheduled from 9:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. on both nights, with motorists directed to follow detour routes using Arthur Street, Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527, and Milltown Road before rejoining Route 18 or heading toward alternate ramps as needed.
This work is included in an $86.1 million federally funded project covering approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick. The broader project involves milling, paving, drainage system improvements, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks with ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderail upgrades, and intersection enhancements within the designated area. Completion is expected by late 2027.
Variable messaging signs have been deployed to inform drivers about traffic pattern changes during construction activities. The department noted that the schedule may change depending on weather or other factors.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for updates about construction schedules and real-time travel information.
