The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on April 10 that a long-term right lane closure will begin on Route 18 northbound in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. The closure is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. and continue through July 2026 as part of ongoing drainage and pavement rehabilitation work.
The lane closure will extend from the Raritan River Railroad (mile post 37.5) to Tices Lane (mile post 38.4). According to the department, this measure is necessary for installing drainage systems and making curb and sidewalk repairs. Access to business driveways and side streets along the affected section will be maintained during construction.
This project is part of an $86.1 million federally funded initiative focused on improving approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick. Planned improvements include milling and paving, upgrading drainage systems and storm water basins, relocating utilities, installing new sidewalks with ADA-compliant curb ramps, upgrading guiderails, and enhancing various intersections within the project area. The overall project is expected to be completed by late 2027.
Variable messaging signs are being used to notify drivers about changes in traffic patterns related to this work. The department also said that the schedule may change due to weather or other unforeseen factors.
Motorists are encouraged by transportation officials to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for updates on construction progress and real-time travel information.
