Route 18 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, is closed in both directions due to emergency repairs following a crash that knocked down utility poles near Rues Lane late on February 4. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), crews have been working overnight and continue efforts to replace the damaged poles and wires.

The closure began after all lanes were blocked by fallen poles and wires as a result of the incident. NJDOT stated, “Crews have been working through the night and are continuing to work to replace the poles and wires. Work is expected to be completed tonight. If it is possible to restore any lanes of traffic, a portion of the road may reopen sooner.” Motorists are advised to expect significant congestion and delays while repairs are underway.

Detours have been established for both southbound and northbound traffic on Route 18. Southbound drivers are directed either via Rues Lane onto Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527, then Main Street/CR 615 before rejoining Route 18; or alternatively, from Rues Lane onto Summerhill Road/CR 613 southbound, then Main Street/CR 615 back to Route 18. Northbound motorists will be detoured via CR 527 north/Main Street/Spotswood, then Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527, Rues Lane, and back onto Route 18 northbound.

Variable messaging signs are being used to inform drivers about changes in traffic patterns related to this work. The schedule for completion may change depending on weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
