Route 1 in Edison, Middlesex County has been closed in both directions for emergency repairs following a watermain break near the Raceway gas station before Woodbridge Avenue/CR 514. The closure, which began around 1 p.m. on January 26, also affects the Route 18 northbound ramp to Route 1 northbound.
According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), “Route 1 is closed and detoured in both directions for emergency repairs to a broken watermain near the Raceway gas station before Woodbridge Avenue/CR 514 in Edison, Middlesex County.”
At approximately 3 p.m., Route 1 southbound was closed at Plainfield Avenue. NJDOT advises motorists to expect significant delays during both the evening commute on Monday and Tuesday morning’s rush hour, and recommends considering alternate routes.
Edison Water Utility crews are currently working on repairs to the damaged watermain. The department anticipates that repairs will be completed by Tuesday, January 27; however, if work finishes earlier, roadways may reopen sooner.
Detours have been established for all affected routes:
– For Route 1 northbound traffic: drivers will be redirected onto Route 18 northbound and follow signs toward Route 27/Highland Park before rejoining Route 1.
– Southbound traffic on Route 1 will be diverted via Plainfield Avenue/CR 527 northbound and then directed through several local roads back onto Route 1.
– The detour for those attempting to access Route 1 northbound from either direction of Route 18 involves continuing on Route 18, following signs for Highland Park via Route 27, and using Woodbridge Avenue/CR514 eastbound.
NJDOT notes that “the precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.” Motorists can check www.511nj.org for updates about construction status and real-time travel information.
