The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 21 that Route 19/Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen will have single lane closures in both directions this weekend as part of the ongoing Hudson Tunnel Project. The closures are necessary to complete final milling and paving work related to the Gateway Program.
The affected area will see one lane closed in each direction between Taco Bell and Route 3, starting at 9 p.m. Friday, March 20, and continuing until 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21. One lane will remain open in each direction during this period. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays while traveling through the work zone.
This construction is part of the larger Hudson Tunnel Project under the Gateway Program, which aims to replace and update rail infrastructure along a ten-mile stretch of the Northeast Corridor. The project includes building a new two-track rail tunnel under the Hudson River between the Bergen Palisades in New Jersey and Manhattan. More information about the Gateway Program can be found at www.gatewayprogram.org.
Officials noted that timing for this work may change due to weather or other unforeseen factors. Drivers are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time updates and follow NJDOT on social media platforms for further news.
