Restoration News reported that Representative Mikie Sherrill has pledged to freeze utility bills in her first year as governor. Meanwhile, Governor Phil Murphy expressed skepticism regarding this proposal amid rising electricity prices and ongoing debates over climate policies.

According to Restoration News, electricity prices in New Jersey increased by 20 percent starting in June, raising concerns about affordability across the state. Sherrill’s proposal aims to address voter frustration, but Murphy questioned its feasibility and criticized the plan for lacking detail. This exchange underscores divisions within the Democratic Party as it navigates ambitious climate policies while addressing voter discontent over increasing energy costs.

Polling data from Politico indicates that affordability is the primary issue for New Jersey voters as they approach November’s gubernatorial race, with 72 percent identifying it as a major concern. Specifically, 57 percent of respondents pointed to energy costs, while 63 percent cited property taxes as their main burden. The survey also revealed that Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli is now tied with Sherrill, despite Democrats having a registration advantage of nearly 900,000 voters. This highlights the political risks Democrats face concerning affordability issues.

The Garden State Initiative released a report covered by NJ Spotlight News estimating that New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan could cost residents $5 billion annually and increase electricity rates by 35 percent. The analysis noted that Murphy’s policies have accelerated the retirement of nuclear and coal plants without clear replacements, making the grid more reliant on expensive renewables. PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator, explained in Utility Dive that rising demand from AI data centers, electrification, and manufacturing—alongside policy-driven plant closures—has strained the system and contributed directly to higher electricity prices.

The New Jersey Democratic Party remains one of the most influential political organizations in the state. It currently controls both chambers of the state legislature and holds the governorship under Murphy, who has championed progressive policies on healthcare, education, and renewable energy. However, according to the party’s website, Democrats are facing increasing criticism that their aggressive climate agenda—particularly Murphy’s plan to make New Jersey fully reliant on green energy by 2035—has led to higher costs and undermined affordability for working families.
