The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on May 30 that the Pulaski Skyway northbound on-ramp from Adams Street in South Kearny will be closed and detoured during the day beginning next week and continuing for several weeks. The closure is required to install overhead shielding as part of ongoing rehabilitation work on the historic 93-year-old bridge in Newark. Traffic already traveling on the Pulaski Skyway northbound will not be affected by this ramp closure.

According to the Department, the ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting June 1 and lasting for approximately one month. The closure is necessary for work on piers 71 through 75 in South Kearny. However, officials said the ramp will remain open on World Cup match days or if there is inclement weather.

A detour has been established for motorists using Adams Street who wish to access Route 1&9 North toward Jersey City or New York. Drivers are instructed to turn left onto 2nd Street, then right onto Central Avenue, take the ramp to Route 1&9 North, continue over the Hackensack River via Route 1&9 Truck, stay left at key intersections including Broadway and before Route 440/Communipaw Avenue Intersection, follow Route 1&9 Truck northbound to Tonnelle Circle, and then access either Route 1&9 northbound past Pulaski Skyway or Route 139 East toward Hoboken or Holland Tunnel.

This project is part of Contract 6A within a broader series of construction contracts advancing rehabilitation efforts on the Pulaski Skyway. The Department said it is coordinating with other regional transportation infrastructure projects in an effort to minimize traffic congestion.

The Department has provided a project hotline (973-776-7400) and email address (Pulaski.Skyway@dot.nj.gov) for questions or concerns related to this work. Variable Message Signs will notify motorists about changes in traffic patterns associated with these activities. Officials noted that timing may change due to weather or other factors, and encouraged motorists to check NJDOT’s website at www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
