Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) has voiced strong opposition to a potential increase in New Jersey’s sales tax, which some Trenton Democrats are reportedly considering raising to 7%. In a statement released on December 4, 2025, Pennacchio criticized the proposal and expressed concern about its impact on affordability for state residents.

“Governor-Elect Mikie Sherill should be angry about being left a budget by Trenton Democrats that is $4 billion in the hole, but I hope she delivers on promises to make NJ more affordable and shuts down insane chatter of more tax increases – sales tax increases or otherwise,” said Pennacchio.

The discussion comes as Governor-Elect Mikie Sherill prepares to take office amid significant budget challenges. Pennacchio’s remarks reflect ongoing debates over fiscal policy and taxation in New Jersey.
