The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on March 28 that Peddie Street in Newark, Essex County, will be closed in both directions beginning Tuesday, March 31, through Thursday, April 2. The closure is necessary to allow for railroad crossing repairs between Elizabeth Avenue and Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue. Access will remain open for local traffic and businesses during the construction period.
The project aims to replace the existing railroad crossing and approaches at the Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue intersection with new concrete crossings and asphalt approaches. According to the department, this work is part of a federally funded initiative included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program, which addresses approximately 50 crossings each year across New Jersey.
During construction hours from 7 a.m. Tuesday until 7 p.m. Thursday, detours will be set up for both eastbound and westbound traffic on Peddie Street. Eastbound motorists will be directed to turn left onto Elizabeth Avenue, right onto Concord Street, then right onto Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue before returning to Peddie Street. Westbound drivers should turn right onto Route 27/Frelinghuysen Avenue southbound, left onto Concord Street, then left onto Elizabeth Avenue back toward Peddie Street.
Officials said that “the precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.” Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time updates about travel conditions during the repair period.
This project reflects ongoing efforts by state transportation authorities to improve safety and infrastructure reliability at key intersections throughout New Jersey.
