Utility work is set to begin Tuesday night at the Maple Avenue/CR 507 ramp to Route 208 in Glen Rock and Fairlawn, Bergen County, as part of a bridge replacement project. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced that crews will start excavating in the grassy area at the Maple Avenue/CR 507 northbound ramp to Route 208 northbound from 8 p.m. on December 9 until 6 a.m. on December 10. This work is in preparation for installing utility poles, which is expected to take place overnight on Wednesday, December 10 during the same hours.

The ramp is expected to remain open; however, shoulder closures may occur. If a temporary closure of the ramp becomes necessary, motorists are advised to follow posted detours.

Following pole installation, crews will relocate and install overhead utility wires. Additional activities include removing sign structures, installing sheeting, placing construction barriers, building temporary sidewalks and curb ramps, and installing fencing on the Maple Avenue/CR 507 Bridge over Route 208. These tasks are scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., over several months.

Lane and shoulder closures will be required on both directions of Route 208 and on the Maple Avenue/CR 507 Bridge over Route 208 during construction. At least two lanes will be maintained on Route 208, while one lane will remain open on the bridge using traffic shifts or alternating traffic patterns. Temporary closures of the Maple Avenue/CR 507 northbound ramp to Route 208 northbound may also occur.

A detour for these closures directs motorists traveling northbound on Maple Avenue/CR 507 who wish to access Route 208 northbound to continue straight, turn left onto Harristown Road, then right onto Route 208 northbound.

Motorists are advised by NJDOT: “Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays while driving through the work zone.”

This $10.4 million federally funded project includes replacing the bridge deck as well as repairs to abutments and piers for the Maple Avenue/CR 507 Bridge over Route 208 in Glen Rock and Fairlawn. The project also aims to raise the bridge profile from fourteen feet to fifteen-and-a-half feet for improved under-clearance safety for vehicles traveling beneath it; curbs and sidewalks will also be repaired. Completion is anticipated by late summer of 2028.

Work schedules may change due to weather or other factors. For updates about construction or real-time travel information, NJDOT encourages drivers to visit its traffic website www.511nj.org. Updates can also be found via NJDOT’s social media channels including X (Twitter), Facebook page or Instagram @NewJersey.DOT.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility,” states NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor regarding roadway safety awareness efforts.
