The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced on June 2 that ramps connecting Holtec Boulevard eastbound to Interstate 676 will be closed and detoured overnight this week in Camden. The closures are part of an ongoing bridge replacement and paving project affecting both Camden and Gloucester City in Camden County.
According to the announcement, the I-676 northbound ramp from Holtec Boulevard eastbound is scheduled to be closed beginning at 11 p.m. Monday, June 1, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. This closure is necessary for the placement of construction barriers ahead of upcoming noise wall demolition work. During this period, motorists will be directed onto I-676 southbound before following detour signs back to I-676 northbound via Collings Avenue and Collings Road.
Additionally, the I-676 southbound ramp from Holtec Boulevard eastbound will be closed and detoured overnight on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights during the same hours. These closures are required for drainage improvements. Drivers will follow a posted detour using I-676 northbound to Exit 4 (Atlantic Avenue/Kaigns Avenue), then Atlantic Avenue before returning onto I-676 southbound.
This work is part of a $73.2 million federally funded project aimed at replacing several bridges over Newton Creek and Nicholson Road as well as improving safety features along I-76 and I-676 corridors. The project also includes upgrades such as new noise barriers, enhanced drainage systems, updated sign structures, and installation of intelligent transportation systems throughout the area.
Construction on precast bridge deck panels began last year off-site; replacement of bridge decks is expected to begin in 2026 with additional lane closures anticipated at that time. NJDOT stated it would provide advance notification prior to any further traffic impacts related to these activities.
Variable message signs will alert motorists about changes in traffic patterns due to construction activities. The department advised drivers that timing may change due to weather or other factors and encouraged checking www.511nj.org for updates.
