Senate Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon has criticized Democratic lawmakers for their handling of the New Jersey Fiscal Year 2026 budget process. O’Scanlon claims Democrats approved $500 million in spending through 400 special line-items without proper explanation or public disclosure.

“Democrats jammed through 400 secretive special line-items totaling $500 million of taxpayer money into the budget at midnight without justification or explanation,” said Sen. O’Scanlon. “What the Democrats released today is not transparency, it’s deliberately sanitized of any explanations of how taxpayer money is being spent with sponsorships being manipulated after the fact. This is the ultimate form of disrespect to the people of the Garden State, and we should all be outraged. George Orwell would be proud.”

According to O’Scanlon, Rule 42 of the Joint Rules of the Senate and General Assembly requires that budget resolutions explaining each proposed line item be filed before a vote and made available to the public. He noted that Senate Republicans released their own budget resolutions in June.

O’Scanlon also criticized the timing of the Democrats’ release, stating, “The only reason Democrats waited until 4:00 pm on a Friday in August is because no one is paying attention, and they are ashamed of the blatant pork they are trying to hide. Meanwhile, Republicans, once again, went above and beyond the requirements showing just how a simple click of a button is all it takes to release these details in real time,” he concluded.
