The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has opened the application period for the FY26 Local Bridges Fund program, which will run until December 19, 2025. This initiative offers $44 million in grants to support county bridge improvements across New Jersey.
NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor emphasized the state’s commitment to infrastructure enhancement: “Governor Murphy and the New Jersey Department of Transportation are committed to maintaining and improving local infrastructure to provide a safe and efficient transportation system no matter where you travel within the state.” The program aims to assist counties financially in upgrading bridges under their jurisdiction.
Funded by the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund, each of the state’s 21 counties will receive $1 million. Additional funds are distributed based on a formula considering both total bridge deck area and deck area in poor condition within each county. The grants are part of NJDOT’s Statewide Capital Investment Strategy, focusing on bridges with significant structural deficiencies.
The NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development administers these grants, with evaluations conducted by the Division of Bridge Engineering and Infrastructure Management. Local Aid grants play a crucial role in supporting local systems, including regional planning and projects like Safe Routes to School.
