New Jersey’s small businesses challenge new contractor classification proposal

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has submitted a comment letter to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The letter responds to a proposed rule that could change how independent contractors are classified in New Jersey. NFIB is urging the department to reconsider these changes due to their potential impact on small businesses in the state.

Eileen Kean, NFIB New Jersey State Director, expressed concerns about the proposed rule. “This rule adds layers of complexity to an already confusing process,” she said. She emphasized that small businesses in New Jersey require clarity and stability from governing bodies rather than additional complications from expanded definitions and vague factors affecting worker classification.

The NFIB Small Business Legal Center continues its efforts to protect small business owners’ rights in courts across the nation, including involvement in over 40 cases at both federal and state levels as well as in the U.S. Supreme Court.
