Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco has expressed concerns over New Jersey’s current energy policies, which he attributes to a rise in electric bills and calls for a more balanced energy approach. This comes following a recent survey indicating strong public support for diversifying the state’s energy strategy.
Bucco criticizes the long-standing push by Trenton Democrats towards complete electrification, citing this policy as the reason behind predicted increases in electricity costs, with a 20% hike expected from June 1, 2025. “This latest poll confirms what Senate Republicans have been saying all along: New Jerseyans want a common-sense, balanced energy strategy that delivers affordable, reliable power while protecting our environment,” stated Sen. Bucco.
The survey highlighted several key points:
– A favored solution among respondents is an inclusive energy plan that incorporates both natural gas and renewable resources, garnering 66% support.
– Respondents are more inclined (by 37%) to back leaders advocating for natural gas inclusion to enhance supply and reduce expenses (63%), as opposed to maintaining Governor Murphy’s zero-carbon agenda (26%).
– A significant majority (72%) believes consumers should have the autonomy to select their preferred energy source.
– An overwhelming 80% of participants feel their current electric bills are excessively high and express economic concerns.
Bucco emphasized the need for varied energy solutions, expanding local generation capabilities, and reducing regulatory obstacles that hinder investment. He concluded by asserting that “New Jersey families and businesses deserve better,” advocating for leadership aligned with public preference.
