Senators Joe Pennacchio and Carmen Amato, Jr. have introduced a new bill that aims to criminalize the act of impersonating a first responder while committing another crime. This legislative move seeks to address concerns about public safety and trust in emergency services.

“This legislation is vital in preserving the integrity of our first responders and ensuring the safety of our communities,” stated Senator Pennacchio. He emphasized that such acts undermine public trust in those dedicated to protection and service. “By making this behavior a criminal offense, we are sending a clear message that this dangerous deception will not be tolerated.”

Senator Amato echoed these sentiments, highlighting the risks posed by such impersonations. “Impersonating a first responder is a dangerous act that not only puts public safety at risk but it also deteriorates the trust that communities place in them by creating confusion,” he said. The proposed law would help law enforcement hold accountable those who exploit the authority of first responders for criminal purposes.

The issue has gained attention following reports from California where an individual was arrested for pretending to be a firefighter during criminal activities amid fires in Los Angeles County.
