New Jersey Senate Republicans announced their caucus took the oath of office for the 222nd Legislature on Jan. 13, pledging to focus on affordability and state economic issues.
According to the New Jersey Senate Republicans’ official statement on X, the caucus convened following the 2025 General Assembly elections. Democrats maintain majorities in both chambers, with the Senate composition unchanged at 25 Democrats and 15 Republicans since the last Senate elections. The Republicans have committed to addressing affordability issues amid ongoing economic challenges in the state.
New Jersey residents face a significant financial burden due to having the highest effective property tax rate in the nation at 2.23 percent, with an average annual bill reaching $10,095. According to the Tax Foundation, this contributes to a cost of living that is 15 percent above the national average, affecting housing and utilities. While property taxes fund local services, high rates have led to calls for relief measures.
Nationally, New Jersey ranks among the top states for outmigration, with a net loss of 522,288 residents and $31 billion in income over the past decade as reported by the Sunlight Policy Center. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that in 2024 alone, New Jersey experienced a net outmigration of 35,554 people, placing it 47th out of 50 states for population retention. These trends reflect broader economic pressures compared to states with lower tax burdens.
The New Jersey Senate Republicans form a minority caucus with 15 members in the 40-seat Senate, led by Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco. The caucus focuses on constituent services and advancing legislation related to fiscal responsibility, public safety, education funding, and reducing energy costs while advocating for taxpayer relief and economic growth through bipartisan efforts.
