New Jersey Senate Republicans have announced that Senator Carmen Amato has introduced a bill to reinstate a sales tax holiday for school supplies. The announcement was made on the social media platform X.
The state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday had been in effect through 2022 and 2023 but was eliminated as part of Governor Phil Murphy’s fiscal year 2025 budget negotiations. Its repeal has raised concerns about affordability for families and educators preparing for the school year. Amato is working to reintroduce this relief through bill S-3654 during the August-September shopping season. According to the New Jersey Senate Republicans’ newsroom, the holiday was removed due to Governor Murphy’s budget decisions last year.
Reports estimate that eliminating the tax holiday resulted in parents, teachers, and other back-to-school shoppers paying approximately $35 million more in state sales taxes during the 2024 end-of-summer shopping season. This figure represents the additional financial burden on families and educators who no longer had access to the tax break. The New Jersey Senate Republican press release highlighted this $35 million impact in their efforts to reinstate the holiday.
Amato emphasized that reinstating the tax holiday is a straightforward measure that would provide immediate relief to families and educators facing financial pressure. She noted that recent tax hikes, mounting property tax threats, and a general affordability crisis in the state make this proposal particularly timely and necessary. These concerns were explicitly said in her call to action on the Senate Republicans’ “News Flash” section.
The New Jersey Senate Republicans are the minority caucus in the New Jersey State Senate, representing Republican legislators including Amato, who serves District 9. The caucus focuses on issues such as affordability, fiscal responsibility, and relief for families and taxpayers amid state budget pressures. This organizational description aligns with their role and messaging as referenced in their official communications.
