New Jersey Senate Republicans have announced that Senator Latham Tiver has introduced legislation aimed at blocking bans on gas stoves and gas-powered vehicles. This move is intended to protect consumer choice and address rising energy costs, according to a post on X.

According to NJ Spotlight News, New Jersey is considering several proposals as part of its clean energy initiative. These include policies that could impact the use of gas appliances and the transition to electric vehicles. The proposals have sparked significant debate in the state legislature, with some lawmakers arguing that such changes could lead to higher energy costs and reduced options for residents. Republican legislators, including Senator Tiver, are responding to public concern over potential state mandates by introducing bills designed to protect consumer choice and maintain affordability in the energy sector.

As reported by the New Jersey Monitor, Senator Tiver’s legislative package includes S-4610, known as the “Affordable Home Energy Protection Act,” and S-4611, the “Vehicle Choice Protection Act.” S-4610 aims to prevent state and local governments from enacting rules that restrict fossil-fuel appliances or heating systems. Meanwhile, S-4611 seeks to stop state agencies from banning the sale, registration, or use of new gas-powered vehicles. The New Jersey Monitor highlights that these bills were introduced following concerns among some lawmakers and constituents about the impact of energy mandates on consumer freedom and household budgets.

According to a January 2024 article by NJ.com, residential electricity rates in New Jersey have risen by approximately 20 percent over the last two years, surpassing the national average for electricity price increases. The article attributes these cost hikes to factors such as rising demand, supply constraints, and ongoing investments in grid infrastructure. State officials and legislators have cited these increases in discussions on the economic impact of electrification policies and emphasized the need to keep energy affordable for all residents.

The official New Jersey Senate Republicans website describes them as a caucus of Republican members serving in the New Jersey State Senate. The caucus advocates for policies prioritizing fiscal responsibility, energy affordability, and government transparency while providing updates and resources to constituents throughout the state. As said on their website, they regularly engage with the public on issues including energy, education, and public safety.
