New Jersey Senate Republicans have announced on the social media platform X that electric bills in the state have increased nearly 40% over the past year. They attribute this rise to policies implemented by Democrats.
According to the New Jersey Senate Republican Caucus, electricity costs in New Jersey have been a contentious issue as policymakers pursue clean-energy mandates, leading to higher monthly bills for residents. The Republicans argue that the Democratic control has accelerated cost drivers, including utility programs and offshore wind projects, without providing sufficient protections for ratepayers. They highlight the financial burden on households as evidence of affordability being overlooked and call for regulatory restraint and market reforms. Democrats, however, argue that long-term investments will stabilize prices and improve reliability, although they acknowledge that near-term increases have raised bipartisan concerns.
State regulators certified Basic Generation Service auction results, which are expected to increase average residential bills starting June 1, 2025. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has projected increases ranging from 17.23% to 20.20% across utilities, attributing much of this rise to wholesale energy and PJM capacity prices. Utilities such as PSE&G informed customers that the supply portion would rise about 17%. While temporary bill credits helped mitigate summer impacts, households still faced significantly higher year-over-year costs heading into fall.
Regional capacity pricing has further intensified pressures. PJM’s 2026/27 Base Residual Auction cleared at the price cap ($329.17/MW-day), following a substantial prior-year surge affecting New Jersey’s 2025 rates via BGS. Analysts and advocates noted that the June 2025 bill impact alone averaged roughly 17–20%, translating to more than $20 per month for many households. Utilities now anticipate smaller increases in 2026 if other supply costs remain stable, but families remain sensitive to cumulative hikes.
The New Jersey Senate Republican Caucus is the minority caucus of the New Jersey Senate, based in Trenton’s State House. Led by Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco in 2025, the caucus provides policy, communications, and constituent services for GOP members of the chamber. Its said priorities include affordability, tax relief, and public safety while regularly challenging Democratic fiscal and energy policies perceived as burdensome to ratepayers and small businesses.
