The New Jersey Senate Republicans said on May 20 that Trenton’s school funding formula is broken and that every child deserves a quality education regardless of ZIP code.
The caucus raised the issue in a post on X during state budget hearings with the Commissioner of Education. Senate Republicans said they questioned education officials about the formula and advocated for fairness for students, parents, and taxpayers.
New Jersey’s proposed education budget includes more than $11.9 billion in formula aid to school districts. The proposal includes provisions capping year-over-year aid increases at 6% and reductions at 3%, New Jersey Monitor reported.
During earlier budget committee hearings, Education Commissioner Lily Laux said the funding formula had served its purpose but had become outdated and needed updates for greater predictability and transparency. Some districts have reported pressure from enrollment shifts and costs that exceed limits built into the current system, New Jersey Monitor reported.
New Jersey’s annual K-12 per-pupil spending is listed at $26,280, according to World Population Review. The state ranks among the highest nationally in per-pupil spending.
The New Jersey Senate Republicans caucus comprises Republican members of the New Jersey State Senate. The caucus participates in legislative work on education policy, state budgeting, and related matters through the New Jersey Legislature.
