Today, the New Jersey Senate passed a bill sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30) aimed at safeguarding private woodlands from development. The bill, S-699, awaits the governor’s signature to become law. It proposes that the State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC) establish a program for landowners with at least 20 acres of forest managed under a stewardship plan. This program would enable these landowners to place permanent easements or conservation restrictions on their property, thus preventing future development.
Senator Singer emphasized the significance of this legislation: “Protecting our woodlands is important for both the environment and the quality of life of New Jersey residents.” He added that it ensures natural spaces remain undeveloped while respecting property owners’ rights.
