The New Jersey Senate has approved legislation proposed by Senator Bob Singer aimed at safeguarding minor league baseball in the state. The bill, known as S-4506, seeks to prevent state interference in collective bargaining agreements that govern wages and working conditions for minor league players.
Senator Singer expressed his support for the legislation, stating, “Minor league baseball is more than just entertainment, it’s part of what makes summers in New Jersey so special.” He emphasized that the measure is intended to prevent government overreach and maintain the vitality of baseball in New Jersey.
The new law will exempt minor league players from certain state wage and hour laws, as well as recordkeeping requirements under wage payment laws. This exemption applies only if players are employed under a collective bargaining agreement that explicitly covers their wages and working conditions.
Senator Singer is a devoted fan of minor league baseball and holds season tickets for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws.
