The New Jersey Senate has passed a bill, led by Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco, to expand the list of state-excused school absences. This legislation now includes students who have enlisted or plan to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard and need to participate in military recruitment-related activities during school hours.
“As a proud supporter of our military, I am thrilled to see this bill pass the Senate,” said Sen. Bucco. “Young individuals who commit to serving our country deserve our unwavering support, and this legislation ensures they can pursue their aspirations of military service without jeopardizing their academic progress.”
Currently, state-excused absences include religious observances, participation in Veterans Day events, involvement in school district board of election membership activities, Take Our Children to Work Day, college visits for upperclassmen (up to three days per year), and closures of busing districts that prevent access to receiving schools.
“By formally recognizing military recruitment-related activities as excused absences, New Jersey is sending a clear message that we value and respect the commitment of students preparing to serve our great nation,” Bucco concluded.
