A resolution proposed by Senator Owen Henry, a Republican from the 12th District, aims to recognize September as “Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month” in New Jersey. The proposal has successfully moved through the Senate Health, Human Services, & Senior Citizens Committee.
Senator Henry commented on the initiative’s significance: “Designating September as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month brings greater visibility to the individuals and families affected by this condition. It draws attention to the daily realities of DMD and emphasizes the importance of continued awareness, support, and research.”
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration. Those afflicted often face mobility challenges during adolescence and serious heart and lung issues in early adulthood. The resolution highlights efforts by local nonprofits like JAR of Hope and Ryan’s Quest that assist families and contribute to research into potential treatments such as gene and stem cell therapies.
